Dialog System
Another week, another devlog updating all of you on my progress. This last week, I worked on creating a dialog system for NPCs, allowing the player to talk to NPCs to receive direction (and possibly even quests, though I haven’t decided). The system allows for multiple lines of dialog spread across several dialog boxes, and uses JSON, meaning it is modular and can accept pretty much any input by file.
Please ignore the fact that the NPC is the same sprite as the player, as I am currently working with somewhat limited resources. Still, I’m rather proud of what I’ve managed to accomplish. It certainly doesn’t look pretty, but making it look good is just a matter of assets. Right now, I’m focused almost entirely on code to make things work.
As for the April release, I’m still optimistic that I can meet it, but I am somewhat worried that while the programming will be done, the game design will not. Although the April release is meant to be a demo, I do want it to be an actual game rather than a glorified tech demo. I may have to delay to May, in order to hammer out the design of the game including the level/world. Beyond that, however, I’m making very good progress. Once the baseline game code is done, iterating on top of it should be relatively simple.
Thank you all for sticking with the project! I look forward to sharing more.
