Where we are

Hello everyone! I’m excited to announce Omnicrafter, and even more excited by everyone taking a look at the itch page. I realize that the page itself has little in terms of progress being showcased, so I wanted to make a post detailing some of my process and where things are at from a technical standpoint.

I’ve been working on Omnicrafter since September of 2020, when it was known as “idle adventure” (very basic, I realize). The game is made in Godot 3.2.3, and has been programmed mostly by myself with some assistance from my wife. Art has been done by my friend Alayna, and game design has been done mostly by myself.

So, let’s delve into what I have so far!

Ah, sweet game design!

This is a screenshot of the full level I have made for testing purposes. It’s pretty messy at the time being, but has been well suited for making sure everything is working. Right now, you can chop down trees and break rocks to gather resources, and use those resources to create farms to gather food for you.

Right now, you can build a farm to gather food for you or a lumberjack to chop down trees. The lumberjack actually does chop trees in the overworld, so you want to make sure it is positioned close to trees so it can always be gathering. As for the tool upgrade, at first you will not be able to gather rocks as they are too tough, but you can upgrade your tool to allow it.

Here’s a video of some of what you can do so far. Please keep in mind that the sound assets are very placeholder (yes, that is the default Windows error noise for hitting rocks).

As you can see, there’s still a lot of work to do, but I’m pretty proud of what I have so far. The code has gone through many iterations and cleanups, as I’m a bit of a perfectionist. Still, I believe that I’ve reached a point where I can begin to make rapid progress as much of the infrastructure is now there. Plus, weekly devlogs should serve as ample motivation!

Next week I’ll be covering the actual game design and mission statement of the game. Thanks for taking the time to read!
